Day 1

One of the things I was going to tell them at the morning meeting at 9:00, along with reading my lists, was that I thought they should target the thirty-something women in the suburbs — that they are also the women who weren’t born yesterday and that they have no magazine of their own either. But there is no morning meeting. Around 11:00 one of the male secretaries comes into my room with a huge black leather loose-leaf notebook, opens it up to the chairs section, and tells me to pick out furniture for my office. Around noon a features editor comes in, introduces herself, and gives me pages of material on the “200 Words” column I am to write. She says, “Just use the notes in the folder, check the format from the December issue that’s about to go to print, and write two pieces on these two women. Sorry, there’s no computer for you — just use the typewriter.” And she leaves. One of the secretaries tells me the editor who wrote the first and so far only “200 Words” column was fired last Monday.

The typewriter has no margins, so I spend most of the day fixing my typing. I am afraid to leave for lunch because I think maybe the meeting has been rescheduled. I finish the two pieces, but the editor has gone home and her office is dark. I don’t know what time people work to, so I don’t leave until 7:30. By then I have a migraine, but I still smile all the way up to Ninety-Sixth Street.
